Mohali is officially known as Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, it is a designed city in the Mohali district in Punjab, India, it is a commercial heart lying south-west of Chandigarh. It is the organizational headquarters of the Mohali district. It is one of the six Municipal Corporations of Punjab. It was originally named after Sahibzada Ajit Singh, the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh. It was established in 1966.
Mohali has come up as one of the most salient cities in Punjab and north India. It is evolving rapidly as an IT hub of the state. Specific attention has been made by the state government to make this city one of the best places to live in Punjab. The city has numerous international stadiums like cricket stadium, hockey stadium, indoor stadiums, and a golf course. Mohali also has international connectedness from the co-located Chandigarh International Airport.
Mohali was earlier a part of the Rupnagar District and was cut out and made a part of a separate district in 2006.
Mohali and Chandigarh being connected, with only the boundary separating Punjab and Chandigarh are dividing this area. The original plan of Mohali township is just an extension of the road and an 800m x 1200m extension of the sector design system followed in Chandigarh, without any solitary planning.
The first 11 sectors of the sector design system of Mohali are popularly known as Phases. Initial development was only till Phase 8. The development of sectors after Phase 8 forth started in the late 1980s in Mohali city, and the city got it’s very own bus stand in Phase 8 in the mid-1990s. Some sectors of Chandigarh are shared between Chandigarh and Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar also known as Mohali, like the sectors 48, 51, 52, 54, and 56 onward – all these actually fall in the Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar region but are also considered to a part of Chandigarh region. Each sector has its own commercial space in Mohali. These commercial spaces in Mohali can be rented or purchased by the residents of Mohali to start a small business.
The region has been addressed by an increasing number of outsourcing IT companies. The most recent role played by Mohali city is that of a “satellite town” to Chandigarh. Mohali matured with each developmental stage and as of today, the city is at the peak of becoming a matured economy of its own. The Mohali of the future will be a knowledge-based economy actuate forward by the IT sector in the city.
